MT Framing Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that it can be difficult to make the right choice when it comes to selecting the perfect frame for your artwork. That's why we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help customers make an informed decision.

FAQs

  • What is conservation framing?

Also known as Archival framing, Conservation Framing protects the art by using materials like UV filtering glass and acid free paper products. This will not only preserve the value of your art, but it will keep it looking vibrant.

Archival framing uses the best grade of materials available. Archival mat boards and backing materials have no acidity which protects the artwork. When done properly, archival mounting can be reversed with no damage to artwork while the archival mat board won't fade or stain your art.

  • What is the difference between UV glass and museum glass?

There are a wide range of glazing options that work to both protect your art and increase the beauty and clarity of the image. UV protected glass cuts UV damaging UV light by up to 99%

Museum Glass is the highest quality picture framing glass available, combining 99% UV-blocking protection with absolute transparency and reflection control. Excellent for framing  artwork in circumstances where the ultimate in conservation protection and optimal clarity is required while maintaining the full colour of the artwork.

  • Am I limited by frame size?

No! Although some manufacturers have limits to what they can produce, we work with so many products and vendors that we will always find a way to frame your oversized art.

  • When should I use acrylic vs glass?

Acrylic, or plexiglass is recommended any time shattering glass would be a concern such as, over a bed, in a child's room or in a public commercial area such as above restarurant seating.

Another advantage is the reduced weight of plexiglass which is especially important on large pieces.

  • What options do I have to frame a canvas?

Canvases should always be stretched on stretcher bars. They can be stretched with finished sides in order to hang simply without a frame, or we can add a liner inside a frame for a traditional look (on a canvas the liner plays the part of a mat). Another contemporary and very popular option is to use a canvas float frame. This is a frame specially made for canvas, which leaves a small gap between the art and frame, to give the canvas an appearance of "floating" within the frame.

  • Do you have parking?

Yes! Reserved parking is right in front.

  • Can you deliver my frames when they are ready?

We work alongside a local art handling company to help facilitate delivery and installation. Email us for more info.

Working on a budget? No problem. Our designers can show you alternatives and advise you on how you might best leverage your dollars. We make it easy to try different frames, different mats and different glazings until you find the combination that satisfies your senses and meets your budget.

  • Can you stretch canvas?

Yes. We build stretcher bars with bracing. We can stretch at different depths to hang canvases either framed or unframed. Some paintings need special consideration when stretching.

  • Do you print?

No, we do not offer printing services in house but we work alongside many local printers and are happy to make recommendations.

  • How do I clean my glass?

When needed, use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth, such as micro-fibre,  to clean the glass.

    • Spray a small amount of ammonia-free cleaner onto the cloth. Spraying on the cloth will prevent overspray.
    • Lightly press the cloth against the glass and clean in round, circular motions
  • How do I clean acrylic or plexi-glass?

For Conservation Acrylic and Premium  Acrylic

    • Use an acrylic cleaner and a clean damp cleaning cloth. Apply only light pressure, rinse with clean water, or a cleaner designed specifically for acrylic, and dry by blotting with a clean, damp cloth or chamois.
    • Do not use dry or gritty cloths, they may cause surface scratches and create a static electric charge on the surface.
    • Do not use glass cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds or solvents such as acetone, gasoline, or lacquer to clean acrylic.

For Conservation Reflection Acrylic and Reflection Control® Acrylic:

    Dry method cleaning

    • Spot-clean any finger prints with the dry micro-fiber cloth by wiping in a soft, circular motion.

DO NOT use window cleaning sprays, kitchen scouring compounds, or solvents such as acetone, gasoline, or lacquer thinner to clean acrylic materials.

  • Can sunlight harm my artwork?

Not only sunlight, but all light containing UV rays (including indoor lighting) will deteriorate your art. Fading colors and yellowing paper are a sure sign that your art is being damaged. We recommend UV protective glass or UV plexiglass when framing all artwork of value to ensure protection from UV light.
